Michael Miller MS
Michael Miller is an experienced technology and business leader. He has been involved in corporate high-technology development, including Fortune 500 companies and local startups. Currently, he is the founder and CEO of a consulting company, Avolant LLC, and the CEO of Quentoros.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics from Marshall University (1977) and a Master of Science degree in Physics from Virginia Tech (1980). Miller worked for Litton Industries Poly-Scientific division from 1980-1996 as Manager of Advanced Product Development. From 1996-2008 he worked in high-tech startup companies serving variously as VP of Advanced Materials R&D and VP of Business Development for Luna Innovations, Founding Chief Operating Officer of Luna NanoMaterials (now Luna NanoWorks), and COO and Chief Intellectual Property Officer of Prime Photonics LC. He is also the founder and CEO of Virginia nanoTech LLC, a VT spinout company focused on medical diagnostic technology development. His technical work produced nine patents in photonic components and nanoscale materials and devices for medical and quantum computing applications.
Michael is the current Montgomery Regional Economic Development Commission chairman and the New River-Mount Rogers Regional Workforce Development Board. He serves on the Montgomery County Economic Development Authority and the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) committee for the NRV Regional Commission. He provides technical and business development consulting assistance for tech startups through his consulting firm, Avolant LLC, and served as a business development mentor for the National Science Foundation through Development Capital Networks, where he also served as a reviewer and advisor for selected companies presenting their business plans to VC at the World’s Best Technologies Showcase. Miller held the position of Senior Innovations Officer for the Cleveland Clinic Innovations Alliance, where he was responsible for setting up a technology transfer organization for the Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), and recently retired as the Senior Licensing Manager for Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties, Inc., the technology transfer office for Virginia Tech. In this capacity, he managed an active portfolio of approximately 150 inventions, from disclosure through patenting, marketing, and license negotiation. In addition, he has served as a guest lecturer and business plan competition reviewer for Radford University and Virginia Tech.
Michael Miller is a technologist and business leader with over 35 years of experience in research, development, design, manufacturing, marketing, intellectual property protection, and high-technology products and systems licensing. Mike is a serial entrepreneur, having been involved in the startup of five companies, provided leadership for three others (one of which went public), and mentored more than a dozen others. He brings a wealth of invaluable technology transfer experience to Qentoros as its CEO.
