Thomas Schaer VMD

Dr. Thomas Schaer is the Director of the Penn Vet Institute for Medical Translation at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.  He is also a Technology Fellow at the Mack Institute for Innovation Management at the prestigious Wharton School. 

Dr. Schaer started his journey in medicine in Switzerland with a deep and everlasting impact by his mentor Prof. Maurice E. Mueller (Bern). He has been part of high paced surgical teams treating racehorses, worked with industry to develop and gain approval for medical device products and constantly seeks new opportunities to create value for his organization. He is passionate about being part of the future of healthcare where science intersects with the rapid advancements in health care technology.

At UPenn, Dr. Schaer leads teams of veterinarians, medical doctors, scientists, and engineers in the development of innovative technologies from proof-of-concept studies to pivotal preclinical trials that lead to Federal Drug Administration (FDA) submissions.  He also is involved in preclinical research and development (R&D) for medical devices and drugs. 

Dr. Schaer leads the translation of BIO-PLY™ into the human medical sector.  He also heads the regulatory aspects of the company working with the FDA for approval of BIO-PLY™ for not only veterinary species but eventually humans as well.
